Preliminary Plans for Outdoor Luther Burbank Courts
A brief recap and update
The existing Luther Burbank outdoor courts will be rebuilt with construction likely to begin this fall. The initial phase calls for new concrete, which should take a couple of weeks. There's a bit more than just pouring concrete, several changes will occur around the court and a new drainage line will be installed. Courts lines will be painted and nets will be installed, however this is not the final top layer surface. The concrete needs about nine months to fully cure. In the spring, a specifically designed surface will be added as a final layer, lines painted and a color scheme appropriate to court play.
This project was made possible by a King County grant.
Here's where we need your help. The firm hired by the city would like our community to weigh in on the design options. Like everything in life, there are trade-offs. Some things to consider before you provide input:
Budget is not unlimited. Recommendations have to be within scope of the project and the funds allocated
This is an initial design. Look for updates!
Once the courts are built, the City will continue to evaluate usage and any unintended consequences. Changes may be made according to available budget and urgency
Over time, the Dink On Mercer Island club may be in a position to raise and donate funds for additional amenities
Courts have to be designed following the guidance of the USA Pickleball organization and Seattle Metro Pickleball Association wherever possible
6 courts allow for complete fencing between each court with a stadium/ADA court included
8 courts will create groups of two courts with fencing around them. Fencing is surrounding the courts is included except one separating the middle courts
10 courts maximizes the space with the most courts possible, although this does not fully comply with USA Pickleball standards, noted on the design page
Think about the flow of people coming on and off the courts, particularly with fencing
Please do not comment about policy and rules, that will come later. Keep input focused on construction and design
Your feedback needed by noon, June 7th!
See the designs by the buttons near the top of the page
Send an email providing your comments and appropriate suggestions by noon, June 7th. The City staff and the design firm will receive a summary on June 8th. You don't need to be a member of the club to comment, but that also doesn't stop someone from signing up.
Much more detail below. But if you want to cut to the summary, here it is:
The City has asked for community input. Your voice counts! Bear in mind the Parks & Rec Dept. will be making all the final decisions.
There are 6 separate designs, from 10 courts with no fencing, to 8 courts with fencing, to 6 courts including a stadium/ADA court. There is a page for each one. Follow the links below.
Feedback is needed by noon, June 7th.
Please select your favorite design and send an email to dinkonmercerisland@gmail.com. Include why you like it.
In that same email, feel free to comment of features you like or don't like, or anything you feel is missing. Be mindful of the scope of this project. Anything regarding policy will come later. This is only about the build out.
Send any questions you might have, I'll do my best to answer them prior to the deadline.
A summary of comments will be given to the City and the design firm, DA Hogan, on June 8th.
These designs are preliminary. Final design will be posted when available.
